The trustees of Southampton based Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) are pleased to announce the appointment of Stuart Rivers as its new Chief Executive Officer. He is replacing Peter Tomlin MBE who is retiring after 20 years at the Board, the last 4½ years as its Chief Executive Officer. It is anticipated that Stuart will join the MNWB on 1st December 2021.
Stuart is a highly experienced, successful and well-regarded business leader with experience in multinational businesses and international charities. He has had a successful career in Ericsson, rising from a Support Centre Manager to Global Commercial Director, and The Salvation Army where, following 2 years’ residential training, he spent 5 years in church and community leadership. More recently, Stuart was Chief Executive Officer of Sailors’ Society where he delivered a strong programme of activities around the world supporting the welfare of seafarers and their families. He is currently supporting MNWB as a consultant, with a focus on technology projects that support the establishment of welfare boards under the auspices of ILO Maritime Labour Convention, 2006.
The MNWB’s Chair of trustees, Capt. Andrew Cassels, said, ‘We are delighted to have secured such a strong candidate to build on the progress and successes of the MNWB.’
Stuart said, ‘With the impact of the ongoing pandemic, there has never been a more important time for the sector to work together to support seafarers and their families. While there may be challenges ahead, I am excited about building upon the strong track record and past successes of MNWB.’
Chair, Capt. Andrew Cassels added, ‘The combination of Stuart’s experience, leadership and drive will support our constituent member organisations and Port Welfare Committees, making him the ideal fit for the MNWB in its next stage of development as the UK’s National Seafarers’ Welfare Board.’
